Among the wide choice of mulches on the market, it is never easy to know which one to choose according to the area and the plants to be mulched.
That’s why we’ve prepared a little detailed article for you, with our selection and a few tips as a bonus.
Mulching for your beds
Most mulches adapt perfectly to the protection and decoration of flower beds, however our preference is for natural or colored wood chips. The natural ones to give a brighter atmosphere and thus brighten up this corner of the garden. The colored ones to give pep and bring out the green of your plants! In the range of colors available on the market, we vote for red tones which blend wonderfully with the green of plants.
For a more authentic and sober look, you can opt for bark mulch or large caliber bark.
Finally, for an atmosphere "zen garden ", Slate mulch will be your best ally! Its light color and its raw appearance will give your bed a little Japanese air. You can also combine slate with Hydrangeas, an assembly that will be the most beautiful effect.
Besides, now is the time to give yourself a little tip: did you know that the alumina in slate helps give your hydrangeas a beautiful bluish color?
Mulching for borders and paths
A beautiful garden is also played in the details!
This is why the curbs and alleys are not to be neglected.
Choose mineral mulches that will deteriorate less over time, such as pozzolana red or black or the slate mulch or sand for your pond borders.
Mulching will also prevent unwanted weeds from invading your paths and borders.
Mulching at the foot of trees and shrubs
Another tip that will sublimate your garden and make a difference: what if you mulch your tree bases?
An even more useful technique for young shrubs, because mulching will keep the soil moist, which is very important, especially during hot weather.
Here, we will opt instead for plant mulch such as poplar fiber, bark in large caliber or even coconut chips.
Mulching for vegetable patch
If you are embarking on the great adventure of mulching, we can only recommend that you start with the vegetable garden. This is perhaps where the benefits will be felt the most. Once again, vegetable mulching is to be preferred, because by decomposing, it will come to fertilize your soil. You can set your sights, eyes closed, on the cocoa shell and its good chocolate smell. On the buckwheat husk that will keep snails and slugs away from your beautiful salads, or on flax mulch, the star of vegetable mulches.
Mulching for potted plants
Finally the last place not to forget, your terrace! And yes even your potted plants deserve to be mulched. Why ? Because in the event of great heat, they will be the first to suffer and a nice layer of mulch will allow the soil to stay moist longer.
For a long time the clay bead was the star of potted plants, but now the offer has grown, and you can find a multitude of mulches suitable for pots. The small sizes of bags, present in garden centers, will allow you to mix colors and textures more easily and without breaking the bank.
Our preference goes towards the mini-bark which will embellish your Mediterranean plants and your citrus fruits or towards the Copolight®, this mineral mulch, clear and light that will bring brightness and a touch of minimalism to your terrace!
